twenty five - the game

Twenty-Five – The Game
Twenty-five small cones with a circular base are to be placed inside a circular frame. The cones come in seven different colors and three slightly varying diameters.
Difficulty Level:
As you might expect, this puzzle is tricky: the cones must be placed in the frame without any obvious system, and space often runs out just as you reach the last two pieces or the very last one. You can, of course, set a goal to first place most of the cones and then gradually improve your result. Just to be safe, there are four "parking spaces" for leftover cones inside the frame.
In terms of classification, this puzzle is essentially a two-dimensional problem: 25 small circular discs are to be placed inside a large circular disc. Theory suggests that even problems involving the placement of uniformly sized discs are difficult to solve. Consequently, the only way to find a solution is through systematic trial and error.
It turns out that tightly packed cones can be compressed slightly by the pressure from their neighbors. This allows for a final solution where all 25 cones fit tightly together inside the frame. There are several possible solutions, which is evident from the varying color distributions.
Additional Challenges:
Once you have gained some practice, you can aim for solutions with appealing color arrangements. This could mean placing as many cones of the same color as possible next to each other, or creating a pattern that is at least partially symmetrical. There are no limits to your imagination here.

Description

The game’s inventor is the German game designer Fritz Gruber (1956–2016). The game was originally released under the name Crux 25, with its visual design created by artist F.X. Baumgartner. Later, the German publisher RR Trading licensed and released the same game mechanics under the updated name Twenty Five – The Game: Train Your Brain. Fritz Gruber was also widely known in the gaming industry as a spokesperson for German giants (such as Kosmos and Simba Toys) and as a long-time influential figure behind the prestigious Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) jury.
"Twenty Five – The Game: Train Your Brain" is a mechanical brainteaser and puzzle game published by the German publisher RR Trading, designed to challenge logical thinking and spatial awareness. The game is aimed at players from 12 up to 88 years old, and it can be played alone or together with others.
The basic idea and mechanics in a nutshell:
Goal of the game: The task is to place 25 different-colored plastic cones (or "hatts") inside the frame of the game board so that they fit tightly and securely in place.
The challenge: The shape of the frame and the arrangement of the cones make the task challenging, as the pieces do not just fit anywhere. This is a so-called 2D packing puzzle.
Multiple solutions: There is no single correct answer. The game can be solved in several different ways, which is reflected in the varying color distributions on the finished board.
Additional tasks: Once you learn the basic mechanics, you can increase the difficulty level yourself by trying to create visually symmetrical color patterns or by aiming to group cones of the same color next to each other.
